Finally need a flash gun

Having recently bought a 7D Mk2 with the 17-55mm 2.8 I've had a couple of occasions when I've wanted/needed to use the camera's built in flash. That causes a problem because the size of the lens hood creates a shadow in the photo.

So at long last I think it is time to buy a flash. I would still say I don't need a flash very often, but that may be the fact I've only ever had a built in one when in actual fact last week even that came in handy for this shot;



I know very little about flashes and have only recently started to look in to them and seen all sorts of acronyms like TTL and talk of high speed syncing (which I guess relates to supported shutter speed).

I was looking at YongNuo units over Canon due to the cost saving. Could anyone offer any advice or recommendations?

I use a yongnuo 468exii on my 60d with no problems at all. Build quality isn't as good as a canon flash but other than that it does TTL when on camera. Even the recycle time is quick

I used a canon 580 ex mk1 for a long time and it was excellent. I would certainly recommend one. You can buy them used for around £140. More power than the 430mk2.
