Hello there all,

Anyone know if AF tuning is required on a manual focus lens ? (Nikon d7100 with Samyang 85mm). i.e manual focus through viewfinder can be a bit hit and miss and there is a bit of latitude in the 'focus' ok signal in the finder - will fine tuning make a difference? Also in live view - is that going to accurate regardless of AF tuning ?

Err, it's manual, it is in focus when you turn the ring to the right place. Live view will give you the exact shot you are seeing.
 
The green ok dot can be very finicky. Best bet is to use live view, zoomed, to achieve sharp focus. Most manual shooters just go by the distance scale and tweak in the vf - you get used to it over time. Not relying on the dot, but more on your eyes.
 
OK thanks folks . It was in my mind that when focussing through view finder (mirror system) that if the mirror is slightly out for auto focus (hence the need to fine tune) it may be out for manual focus and be inaccurate to the eye. Just a thought .
 
You can get focusing screens to aid MF, there's one called Katzeye.
 
Certainly with Canon DSLRs you can. And you can get adapters with programmable chips for those models without AF fine tune.

As far as Nikon goes, I assume the same holds true so long as the camera can identify the lens i.e. there is a chip glued on the mount. This is an assumption however!
 
The people behind Dot-Tune discovered that if the lens or camera was set to manual focus then the green dot gave a much larger range for in focus than the same lens set to auto.

I suspect this is what you're seeing.
