Fire and Flames

I would really welcome some advice and suggestions about shooting 'fire' and flames. I don't mean fire in a big way as in forest, house etc but tight in on it. Ideally I need to show the source of the fire as wood rather than any other kind of fuel. Somehow I would like it to be more than just a record of flames.
This is for a project that includes other subjects - wood, water etc
Any thoughts please :-)

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this post, still finding my way around.

Hi Caroline, the post seems a little vague to me. What camera are you using. I would suggest using a long lens (for obvious reasons) and shutter priority if you wish to capture a flame , but if you want to go tight in to the heart of the fire, then switch to ap priority and maybe under expose by half a stop, to retain the detail in th burning wood. If you search for the poty comp last year, Morph on this forum posted a wonderful shot of a fire.

I've tried it on a couple of different settings, shutter speed and wb being the main ones. I had it crisp or smooth and blurred with shutter setting, then i could choose flame colour with wb.

I was shooting a bonfire from a telephoto lens on a tripod a fair bit away.
Don't think I really cracked it as I allways had background issues and never really liked any of my results, but the last time we had a proper bonfire I was very new to all this.

Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Caroline, this is the picture, if it works!!!!

This is Morphs photo, not mine so copyright is his etc etc.

Thanks Dean, and also Morph :-)

Superb pic, this is the sort of image I should be trying for. I would be interested to know the techie stuff here too if that's possible ?

My camera - 40D, canon lenses 24-105, 70-200, tripod, fire extinguisher in reserve. Apologies for not specifying camera etc previously.
