A relative lives in an penthouse apartment with a balcony that gives a clear view over the city. Especially on NYE and less so around bonfire night the view means there's lots of firework bursts in every direction. Any suggestions for camera settings for taking pics of firework displays? I only have a ancient bridge camera (Nikon Coolpix P90) with max shutter time of 8 seconds (no bulb facility).

Depends how far away the fireworks are but close up they are quite bright and the city will also be quite bright so 8 seconds or less should be fine. The hard part is balancing the brightness of ambient light and other lighting with the fireworks. Also if you are not close to the fireworks knowing what is going off when/where could be tricky, you will need the camera on a tripod, point it in a direction and just take loads of shots, review and vary the shutter speed accordingly

If you know where there are some "proper" organised displays, aim at those areas and start shooting when they start the displays, Keep taking 8s exposures to get as many shots as possible. After the first, have a quick check on the review screen to see if you need a wider/narrower aperture to get more colour. Shoot in M mode to give you full control (if the P90 allows this.)

Thanks sirch & Nod. Yes the P90 has M mode as well as a 'Fireworks show' setting under the SCENE mode.

Hope the fireworks go ahead, here they are cancelled to prevent crowds gathering to watch.
