Hi guys,

Just ordered a 580EX II and I want to be able to fire it from off the camera. It can't be wired.

What's my opinions?

I remember asking before and the Canon item was £120 or something silly?

Can you link me to items you've used and know work well?

Also, could you explain how it works? Never done anything like this before.

Luke

Are you wanting to retain the ttl functions? If so you'll need either that Canon gadget ( Nikon here) or a ttl cable (from about £20). The other option is to go down the Ebay trigger route, but that would be manual only....

What's TTL functions?

I saw some guy at a photoshoot place like 4 flash guns in a car to light up the interior, and he had a small device on top of his 450D. He released the shutter and all 4 fired at once...

I want that basically, as I intend to buy another 580EX II in the future.

For the kind of stuff you're talking about then you'll (probably) be setting the output manually, so you're looking at something like Ebay triggers, Skyports or Pocket Wizards, depending on how deep your pockets are ;)

Look on the Gadget Infinity website for Cactus V4 triggers, these will do exactly what you want on a budget, if not Pocket Wizards

What do Pocket Wizards do?

Can anyone link me to a tried-and-tested eBay method?

Google pocket wizards the website is very helpful both google and the PW site.

Watch out though you normally only get one lol i was gonna get them but at £140 each didn't think it was worth it at the stage im at.

Skyports are much cheaper and as good for the level [i'm at] so looking at a set of those.

Heard lots about the ebay method but everytime i search they look very cheap and tacky might work ok i guess, am interested in peoples examples of ebay methods that work.

I use canon st-e2. However, I don't like the fact that you ONLY get ETTL with that, unless someone can tell me how to turn it off. For the price of ebay triggers. I'm gonna look at those anyway.

The latest pocket wizards now fire ETTL but they are sooooooooooooooo expensive.

Won't it trigger your speedlites if you put them in manual?

Hmmm,

never tried it,

'goes off to do a speedlite test'

Welp, I tinks you can!

Fit ST-E2 to camera and fix to tripod.

Switch on speedlite and set to slave.

Hold down mode button on speedlite till ettl changes to flashing M on speedlite display

Adjust power output setting with rotary dial to read 1/1, ..........M is flashing.

take pic, whiteout!

Adjust power output setting to to read 1/128. ...........M is flashing

nic pic

wait's while everyone tries it out!

I'm sure you can. It's mentioned as a feature in the manual

What flashguns are you using with it?
