thanks again for the replies, seems my camera's all up to date then............

ok i have just purchased another used 400D and the firmware version on this camera is 1.1.0 so it needs upgrading to the 1.1.1 version, now has anyone ever done this upgrade who may be able to give me some pointers, or possibly know of some short cut's or simpler ways to carry this out please, cos it looks pretty technical from what i can see.......thanks

this is the link i found: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html

The main thing is to make sure your battery is fully charged or the camera is plugged into mains power, as a power failure during the upgrade will lock the camera up and mean it has to go to a Canon Service Centre to be sorted out.

I find the easiest way to do it is using a CF card and card reader.

First of all format a CF card in the camera you want to upgrade.

Now download the upgrade file - just click on the link.

Once it's downloaded to your PC, just click the icon and it unzips the file giving you a second icon. It's this 2nd icon which you need for the upgrade.

Put your formatted card into your card reader then simply drag the icon onto the CF card which copies it there.

Put the card back in the camera and in the menus scroll to the software version page. The upgrade on the card will be detected and you'll be asked if you want to upgrade. Plain sailing from there - just don't press any buttons or turn off the power till the upgrade is finished.

wow CT you make it all sound so easy, but i will give it a go, not a problem for batteries as i have a few, do you know how long the actual download from card to camera should take ?

i've tried this several times now and i'm having no luck atall, when i click on the agreement and download the update (in windows ofcourse) and then try to open it, windows cannot open it.
also when i put my card in my camera and format it, then put it in a card reader and connect to the pc, it opens up in exactly the same way ie copy pics or veiw pics etc........is this right ?
this whole exercise seems to be a lot more difficult than i hoped, help!!!!!

you should be able to view your CF card in my computer.

what message do you get when you double click the firmware download?

when you unzip what you download, it should be a *.fir file, stick this in the root of your memory card if reading from a card reader as removable driver

did both mine the other day, was easy peasy :)

The file you dowload is a zipped (compressed) file. You need to right click on the downloaded icon and from the menu with appears select 'extract all'. That unzips the file and provides the second icon which is the actual firmware upgrade. Drag that icon onto your card as described earlier and you should have no probs.

I did both my 50Ds with no probs at all.

the file i have on my pc is: e4kr3111.fir and when i double click on it, it tells me windows cannot open this file

Window can't open it - it's a firmware upgrade only understood by your camera. Assuming it's the correct unzipped file, you just need to drag it onto a formatted CF card. :)

You don't need to be double clicking it at all.

this is still just not happening for me, i've downloaded the upgrade to documents and i can see the formated card in computer, how do i get them together to drag and drop ???

OK let's get this sorted.. :)

Copy and paste the software upgrade icon onto your desktop.

Put the formatted CF card in your card reader.

Got to 'My Computer' and double click the drive which contains your CF card. This opens a window which reresents the contents of your CF card (which will be empty if you've formatted it)

Now select a corner of the open window and drag it smaller so that it only occupies half the screen or less. You should now be able to see your upgrade icon on the desktop side by side with the open (card) window.

Now just drag the icon with your mouse across into the card window which will copy it across.

Now put the card in your camera and using the menus go to the 'Version' screen where you'll be asked if you want to upgrade - follow the prompts.

at last i have finally done it, cor why was that soooo dificult, i had to drag and drop that download to the CF card about 3 or 4 times before it would work for some reason.
thankyou everyone very much for all your help and advice, i'm so glad i found this website...............
