Excellent set for your first attempt at close up, especially with the kit lens.
No 2 for me also.
Keep on posting you will improve. I see that you did not use the flash, although the lighting is fairly good. Try using the flash, this may highlight the darker areas.
I am new to macro/closeup myself so no expert! But the flash tip was given to me by other forum members.
I also have the D60 so always interested in other fellow members with the same camera.

had a re-tweak of no2... including the crop... any better?

Landscape seems to suit it much better and the bee is nicely placed in the shot.For me the closer crop doesn't work as well.
