Hi there,

I'm new to digital slr cameras however as part of a photography course i'm doing i think a digital slr would be a good investment. So i would really like to hear any reccomendations you have as i'm sure the majority of you are experienced and knowledgable. My budget would be a maximum of £300 in total.

To be honest I think you are limited due to your budget and I think you will struggle to get a DSLR for £300. I've seen the canon 350D for about £360.

OK thanks for the honesty. If i say moved my budget up to £400 how much would my options increase?

CHeers that's great thanks. Would you be kind enough to quickly take me over the differences between those 3 kits?

If you want one of them, grab the Olympus E-500 14-42 Kit, the lens is about 28-84 mm film equivalent, the 17.5-45mm starts at 35 (film equivalent), not wide enough, I'd say.
The E-400 is out of stock, it says now.

Other options could be e.g.

and
http://www.digitaldepot.co.uk/Digit..._K100D_Super_+_18-55mm_Lens/product_info.html

The D40 and K100D might not be enough if you crop a lot, though.
the D40 and D40x (D40x has bigger buffer and 10 million pixels instead of 6 mill. of the D40) have some limitations in available lenses compared to higher / some older models, there's a thread about this here:

You should probably read that one if you want to buy the Nikon D40 or D40x.

My advice would be to go for a good second hand Canon 350D.
£300 should get one with a kit lens....I sold one last month for this price with 2 lenses...it's about the going rate and there should be plenty around now as people go for the 40D.
