First DLSR - good beginners choice?

I'm soon going to start looking for my first DSLR, and to be honest, feel a little bamboozled with the choice!

I don't want anything too complicated that I have to fiddle about with lots of different options & settings, but I DO want to be able to take close ups, and animals in motion - can I get away with just one lens for this? or will I need a second?

Although I love my P&S Nikon P5100, I can't seem to get good sharp images of moving animals, or waves crashing etc, and although I've got a couple of 'add on' lenses for it, I still feel a bit disappointed in my execution of the photo - for instance the delay in pressing the button & the pic being taken - like this :

No real DoF, and because of the 'lag' neither dog is particularly in focus :'(

I also don't want to have a huge camera, as my hands are really small.

any suggestions for a camera that fits in with what I'm looking for that's not too big?

thanks

Somethink like a Canon 350d or 450d may be. They have all the functionality of a dSLR (because they are dSLRs hahaha) but they are very small and might suit you. There is no shutter lag and, although there are tonnes of different settings, you can start on fully automatic and take it from there.

I made my entry in to digital photography with a 350d and loved it.

and....

Because they are a few years old now, you won't need to sell your grandmother to get one.

You can do loads of stuff with one midrange zoom lens and I'd say that's probably where you should start.

youre best sticking with canon / nikon, then as you progress there are more bargains around, and a wider range of lenses / accessories.

second hand - look at the Canon EOS 350/400 or the Nikon D40/D60

if youre going to buy new - Canon EOS 450/500 or the Nikon D3000/D5000

Any of them, old or new will give you what you need, its all down to personal preference.

As a Nikon man I'd say grab a used Nikon D40 with the kit 18-55mm lens.

It's just a damn fine camera. Lightweight, easy to use, great images.

When you want to upgrade, you'll still get a good price for it.

thanks eveyrone!

I have to say the Nikon name appeals to me as I feel comfortable with the one I have now.

I'll be going along to the shops with my list of possibles to see how I like the feel of them next week.

thanks again :)

hi i have just got into photography and know nothing about all the tech stuff but have brought a canon 1000d and am very impressed with it. i am only using the manual settings and find these easy to understand and work out. i have some photos on the forum so you can see what kind of shots yopu can get. These were taken with the kit lenses provided, plus it was one of the cheaper models.

my work so far
