Hey Guys,

OK, im just looking for some advice on my very first DSLR. i've been interested in learning photography for some time but other things have occupied my time sadly. Now that i have finished my degree, im thinking now would be a good time to start.

So for someone like myself what would you guys recommend for my first DSLR. i have no previous experiance so im thinking that buying a 2nd hand SLR to begin with would be the wise option. A friend suggested a Nikon D40 as a good start, although he states it is a few years old, but ive looked and can get my hands on one for £200 inc the 18-55mm standard lens. Another has also stated the Sony alpha A230 which can be picked up new for £260.

Any suggestions? Obviously, i just want to get the best product for my money, so im all ears. Also, any suggestions of the "beginners bible" would be good to teach my the basics to get me going.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't know anything about the Sony Alpha cameras - I don't tend to buy any Sony products (personal preference), but I know a few people who have Alpha models and their images seem very good.

I wonder how much a Canon 400D goes for these days ?

Standard advise on these threads is to pop into a local camera store and have a feel of the camera's to see what feels comfy in your hands, it does make a big difference.

Knowing what you want to shoot will also help guide the decision as some camera's are better (albeit slightly) at some things than others and may influence the decision.

For second hand kit there is a superb classified section in here soyou can have a look at what is available at what prices, for help from the forum a budget would also help with any pointers...

One warning I would give as someone who is also new to photography, it gets expensive quickly if the bug bites and you want that better kit :D

Hi,

yeah thats what i figured. i popped into the 2nd hand shop which has the D40 and the feel etc seems absolutely fine with my smallish hands, although i havent had the chance to check out the sony yet. One thing im not sure about is the specs under the hood. once i have a few camera's to choose from i good then go on which one felt right for me.

Ive just had a look at the 400D and its in the same shop for 260. the 400D and D40 seem to be aimed at the same audience. would these be the type of cameras best suited towards myself?
