Hi everyone! Used these forums for ages to glean a lot of really useful info but now I'm after some specific advice.

I got myself a Fujifilm Finepix S4000 bridge camera about 6 months ago. After a fair bit of use I'm beginning to realise that it just doesn't have enough 'proper DSLR' functions for me. (Prob should have done more research first).

So that's going on eBay and I'm gonna fork out for a DSLR. Got an all-in budget of about £600. I'm more or less set on the Canon EOS 550d.

Seen a good looking deal - http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-e...-kit-892-p.asp - but I've heard bad things about the kit lenses offered. I'd ideally like a good all round lens that is capable of good action shots. Not sure either of these lenses is fast enough for that.

I'd really like some advice on:

- if this looks like a good kit deal for a beginner.

- should I purchase the body for about £350 and look for a better lens?

and

- am I overlooking any other cameras that might fit the bill better?

Thanks very much in advance for your replies. You'll be helping me immensely because my head it battered trying to decide :-)

Cheers,

Danny.

Depends on your budget, you are unlikely to get a better lens for the £220 you would have available if buying just the body. Kit lenses are quite capable of giving good results. This was with a kit lens on my 350D

The mark ii lens is an improvement over its predecessor so it's worth getting it with the body & you can tailor any future lens choices as your tastes (& budget) allow

Jen makes a lot of sense in what she says there  use the kit lens get used to your camera and what you can achieve with it then start thinking in terms of upgrades etc once you've got a better understanding of any limitations of basic kit  as by that time you'll also have a better ideas of your true photographic interests

Hi Danny

As others have said, the kit lens is a good lens and not to be overlooked, especially for the price.

As you're starting off, I'd buy the 18-55IS kit lens with the body (the mk II 18-55IS is virtually the same as the mk I, the differences are cosmetic) and when you know what it's limitations are for you, what your budget will allow, you can then upgrade in the future...

The Canon 55-250IS is another great lens to look at, can be got relatively cheaply and for it's price, it's a good buy.

You then have the Canon 70-300IS (I wouldn't bother with the older 75-300's) and then the 70-200L and upwards...

Just had a quick look at this offer and it seems a good deal from HDEW and would get you up and runinng well for quite a while.

Might also be worth asking Ian (Kerso @ flash camera) if he does a similar deal ? He advertises on here in the suppliers section and has a very good reputation.

Oh and welcome to TP
