First DSLR kit

Hi All

I am about to purchase my first DSLR

I have seen the following used kit on what appears to be a very reputable website (not fleebay), will bve used for general photos plus holidays and I have a track car that would like some photo love a couple of times a year

EOS 500D
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II ( or for £30 more Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

All for about £540.00

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

I would try to stretch to a 550d if you can afford. You have until 30 June to get the £30 cashback from Canon on new purchases - check out the Dixons with 18-55 IS kit lens (buy through quidco for that extra discount). Worked out about £540 a few days ago when I bought for a friend.

If you are planning on shooting any video I would pay the extra for the 550d.

Also I dont think that's a very good deal tbh. £540 seems like a tad too much for a second hand 500d kit. I got My 550d with the 18-55 for £538 on Amazon.

Do NOT buy Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II it's one of the worst kit lens ever made. It's good at working as a body cap, no more then that.

On the contrary, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is avery good value lens, go for it.

As for body, I agree with above - go for 550D, it's much better then 500D. I use 500D and I'm very unhappy with it's high ISO performance

I bought the 2 lenses and a new 550d body taking advantage of canons cashback deal that expires today

There where a few marks on the 500body that I was unhappy with and it worked out £100 extra in the end
