I was looking at picking up my first DSLR camera and was originally looking at the Canon EOS 1000D or the 450D. However, I live in the Netherlands and both models come without IS lenses here, whereas I can purchase a 1000D in England for £370, with an IS lens. I am going to England for the summer so I could easily pick it up then, but I am just worried about having to ship it back to England if there is a problem or fault.

Amazon sell the Canon EOS 1100D Digital SLR Camera (inc. 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 DC III Lens Kit) for £430 and the Canon EOS 500D Digital SLR Camera (incl. EF-S 18-55 mm IS Lens Kit) for £508.

I can't spend any more than £600, and even £500+ is a bit of a push. I already have memory cards, and know that I'll need to pick up a case, battery and a few other accessories.

Would I be better buying the 1000D from Jessops, or should I purchase the 1100D from Amazon? I would be willing to pay the extra for the 500D if it was a definite improvement over the 1100D.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that quite a few of the 1000D models suffer from faults and have to be returned, is this the case? Because if I go for the cheapest model (1000D) I would have to buy it in England, and am worried about warranty issues.
 
Hi Natalie. I would suggest going to a camera shop and physically hold the cameras. The 1100D would be a better camera than the 1000D as it has newer technology. I am unsure what the 18-55mm III is like, but I would recommend looking for an Image Stabalised lens.

Last year I had a similar budget to you and I bought a second hand 450D, a memory card, case, a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 lens and a Hoya Pro-1 polarising filter. Don't knock second hand as there is a lot of good genuine kit on the market, plus if you don't take up photography you will be able to pass it without much loss.
 
I recently bought a second hand 1000D (from classifieds on here) for about £200 as it was my first DSLR and I wanted to be try out a DSLR without spending too much money and was working on the principle that I could sell it on if things didn't go well.

I was just getting to grips with it but thought it was a good camera for a beginner, relatively easy to use etc. Am now considering my options again as it was nicked :(
