Hi guys and girls, just a little one to ask for a little bit of advice really.

I have been asked to do the photography for a small music festival in the local town, now i have done pet stuff, some people portraits and mainly sports and scenery photos so this is pretty new to me this type of event.

So basically what kind of lens would you more experienced in the event/situation use??

The marquee is 75m long 17m wide so quite large, now i will have a special pass obviously so can go anywhere around the stage and all areas basically so what kind of situation would you think best??

The short 18-55mm lens in and around the stage or go for the longer optics of a 70-300mm??

I have my 150-500mm lens but i cant see the need for that in a situation of the above, various lights etc will be flashing so im not sure if or how much of a flash i shall be needing??

Many thanks in advance to anyone that replies!

I speak from total ignorance here but ---

Can you get to the venue before the event starts to take a few shots and check out the light?

What time does the event start?

Is all the festival inside the marquee?

hi, the main music for the festival all bands will be indoors incase of poor weather, other entertainment will be outside but main music etc will be indoors.

Quite a feat as lincs fm will be there too apparently! So i am rather wanting it to go well! haha

Yeah i should be able to get down to view what is where and when a couple of days prior, have been sending emails back and forth to the organiser the last few days and hes promised me they will " look after me" where is words, so i think so.

The event is a friday and sat event, Friday is an later afternoon evening do and the sat starts much earlier in afternoon, so the main aim of the question i suppose is the later section when the sun is down and its all kind of inside with just stage lights from what i can gather.

If i need a beast of a flash i can take one.

Flash is basically out for music photography. It trashes the atmosphere of the pics and distracts the group if you are close up and personal.

You are going to be seriously stretched not having anything faster than f/5.6. I'd want f/2.8 as a minimum to be honest.

:plusone: to this every music event I've ever been too has been darker than a very dark place so you either need fast lens or a body that is an ISO beast

Thanks guys, right i have gone and purchased a sigma with f /2.8 as you stated, my fried used to use the same lens for night club photos so touch wood it will come out trump for me as it could lead on to other jobs from the organisers!
