First Flash Gun

Apologies for the absolute beginner question. I've just picked up my first DSLR, an Olympus E500 and want to get a flash gun that I can use off the camera.

I don't want to spend a fortune - what would you suggest?

If it's going to be used off camera, then any cheap flash gun will do

I thought I'd need something specific so it could be triggered from the camera. How would I trigger it off camera with the Olympus E500?

for off camera flash, wireless triggers are the best solution, interfit, hohnel and a few others at around 50 quid for a trigger and a receiver
