First Medium Format Camera HELP

About to start a photography course and some of what we cover will include using medium format cameras, so i want to get a camera to practice and use before and during the course.

my question is, can someone suggest a cheap MFC?

it doesnt need to be great, just something to get use to using. I think i want to use 6x6 or 6x4.5 format.

the cameras i have been looking at are mamilya 645 pro, and similar models, they look great, but cost are £300-400. are they any cheaper / worse versions?

and is it worth buying a holga for £20? or are they rubbish?

I just sold my mamiya 645 1000s with 55mm lens on here for about £150. Similar deals on eBay. A great tool to learn on.
 
you could probably get yourself a decent TLR for £80 on ebay. I'm not 100% on which are the ones to have for that kind of money though :/

another option would be to look at an old folding camera, something like an Agfa Isolette which will shoot in 6x6 format. There's also the Zeiss Ikon folding cameras that i believe are better quality, both can be had fairly cheaply (i picked up an isolette for about £3-4 on a car boot :) )
 
You could also end up with a pile of junk and a vanishing vendor on e-bay!

Hang around a while and keep posting and you'll soon have access to the classifieds section here which may well throw up a bargain for you.

In the meantime, look at the ads in the back of amateur photographer (Mifsuds, Ffordes etc) and see what they're offering for what price. MPB who advertise here are worth a look too.
 
Have a look out for a Mamiya C220. Quite a heavy machine but pretty good quality and the shrewd buyer can pick one up for not much more than £80

Think i will do that before committing to a risky (not tested) camera from ebay!

I agree with Richard with the caveat that you need to check that the belows unit is intact and in good condition.

A great tool to learn on if you can get a sound one that hasn't had a hard life. A lot of wedding photographers used to use these as back ups so are often in better nick than the 330's that were their main cameras.

Cautious a and careful choice and you could find a winner.
