Hi,

Just been asked to do a modelling portfolio for a model who wants to do both clothed and unclothed modelling. Not uncommon I know but just wondered if anyone had any tips regarding, in particular, posing for the nude shots? I have done model shoots before and many portraits just a tad nervous about making sure I do the model justice, and not make them look bad.

thanks

My advice is try not to portray your nerves in front of your model as she/he will pick this up very quickly.

If you know what shots you want, make simple sketches of them or better still, print out a similar poses off the net, its easier for you to describe what you are trying to achieve if you have a picture close at hand, or simply show the model what want.

If you have the time, do a few warm up shots with her fully clothed, just so you can see how she reacts, and make sure you show her the shots too, ask her opinion of them. Also this will enable you to check the lighting etc. Once you both feel comfortable, then you can start the nude work.

And please remember, models are human beings too, so lots of communication with her and make sure she is comfortable, not to hot nor cold. Take lots of breaks and have cold water/soft drinks on hand.

Hope this helps you and good luck with the shoot.

For poses you can always hop onto the Sun web site, check out the Page3 pages and you will see the same poses used repeatedly, you also see where the cropping comes in. e.g standard 3/4 pose they seem to use, body three quarter on, one hand on thigh cropped just below the hand mid-thigh.

Wear loose fitting trousers to save any embarassment is about the best tip I can give really :D

Look at some images you like, and think you can recreate. Learn the poses/lighting, your model will most likely be desperate for some direction.
Talk her through the pose fully clothed before you actually shoot it.

Don't be awkward about the nudity, it will make her awkward too - be relaxed about it...and don't stare at her norks! :D

make sure the room is warm and the model has a covering to warm up in
hairs stand up in the cold
and nipple....;)

total relaxation is required and a female chaperone

Never, never, never alcohol.

Make sure it's warm enough that she can relax and not have goose bumps.

Make sure she has a robe to cover up. No tight fitting clothing as it leaves marks. (That means no bra too)

Get her into position while still robed up and check the lighting and only disrobe for the time it takes to go through a series of shots and then she can put her robe on again.

Never, ever touch a model without asking her permission. Even to move hair, I always ask first. It shows that you have respect for your model and once you establish that way of working your model should appreciate it and work with you.

Work out your lighting as much as you can beforehand, you don't want to be taking an age fiddling with lights while she is waiting in next to nothing.

Don't be afraid to direct her. If you see details that need changing don't be afraid to change it. Just ask nicely :)

Be aware of revealing more than you might wish! Keep an eye on what may be termed one's modesty, a quick check through the viewfinder to make sure you have everything covered (literally) and if not you can always fine tune a pose to preserve modesty. :)

There is no way would I take photos in the nude! Oh sorry you mean the model is going to be nude. Silly me
