Hi,

I'm looking for some advice from our professionals amongst us.

I've been asked to take some macro shots of various tools for use on a website.

I'm happy to take the photos no problem but the company requesting the shots have basically said "Name a price".

They've not asked for many photos are required specifically but I would imagine at least 2 of each tool. So I would reckon 50+ at a guess.

What would you recommend for a starting price? There will be no expenses as far as I'm concerned, so anything is a bonus to me. But I want to put forward a realistic price.

Any advice is welcome.

There will be varying views on this, and there will be a "ask for what you believe you're worth" comment at some point.

I would pin down the number and type of shots they require? Do they need 'on-white' shots for cutting out, or will they be fine with background colour? Will they need views from several angles? What detail shots will they require? WHat are their expectations? Do they have a current style (i.e. a catalogue) that they wish you to continue with? These are just a few questions I'd ask...

To put it in perspective - I've just done a two-hour shoot for a local VAG specialist that wanted roughly 12 shots of particular machinery being used, signage shots, logos, team headshots, courtesy cars, plus a few additional shots. Processing is minimal, time on the job was minimal and it wasn't particularly hard - £450 covered it and was a price they were happy with.

I also have an image of a bolt to shoot this week for a tooling company (for use on a large sign/billboard at their premises); shot against white, a little bit of retouching and £100 in my pocket. I feel it's fair and again, they said that is the figure they were looking at.

Work out how long it will take to shoot AND process AND output - how many hours will that end up being? If it's a 10-hour job in total, would you be happy taking £100 or do you feel worth a lot more?...

Thanks that has given me plenty of food for thought.

It's amazing how little I've taken into account before posting on here.

Clearly I need to get more details from the client before I can put a price on the table. But you've certainly given me some things to think about.
