Hi I am new here and am looking for my first SLR and am looking for a bit of advice on what to get as my first camera. I have been looking for about a week and so far realised that buying used is the way to go but am also a bit concerned about buying from eBay.

I have so far got my sights set on either a Canon EOS 350d or 400d as I dont really want to spend a massive amount (Around £200ish) on my 1st camera just incase I dont get on with it.

I suppose my main questions are what do I need to look for in a camera and also what would you gusy and girls on here recommend as a first camera, I will be mainly taking shots of landscapes, nature etc

Your help will be much appreciated

Many thanks

Dave

ive a 350d, its my first dslr and ive since bought a 18 - 55mm lens, sigma 70 - 300mm and a sigma 105mm macro, ive only had for a couple of weeks and love it, pity the weathers been bad and cant take as many photos as id like.

for £200 you could get a nice 350d and kit lens that should set you off nicely, although that said if you can stretch to the 400d id get that slightly newer model and hopefully fewer piccys taken with it.

The shutter can eventually break and need replacing, but, worrying about the number of actuations is not worthwhile as you're looking at 50,000 plus for pretty much any DSLR and maybe 10 times that with higher spec bodies. Factor in some luck and some people have actually managed over 1 million!

Don't discount "Bridge" cameras and compacts. Some of these will out perform the entry level DSLRs.

Because they dont have removable lenses, there is no dirty sensor issues.

Zoom range is often greater and built in macro is often featured.

For a "First" camera think seriously about the type of pictures you want to produce and go for the camera that will give you the optimum capabilities for those type of images.

Don't get sucked into the hype of makes or pixel count, choose one that suits your needs best.

Google "Digital Camera" and set the shopping values to £180 to £220 and see what comes up...

Go to a good old style camera shop and ask to try the ones you like the look of. Take a memory stick with you and ask for the images to be put on them so you can compare them at home. Shops are desperate for sales so take advantage of this and make them earn the sale.

Have fun...

That's not exactly true...
Any telescoping zoom lens can suck in dust and moisture. Try cleaning the sensor in a bridge camera
