Well, my wife being the awesome wife that she is bought me a Canon 450D for my birthday! After opening the box this morning it was straight to the train station for a trip to London. I tried to read some of the manual on the way as I'd only ever held one before in Jessops and that was it.

Either way I thought I'd share some pics for you to laugh at....lol. C&C very welcome but you might have to explain what you mean, or better still, how I did it :bonk:

I was quite pleased with this one. Apart from lopping off the tail I didnt get too much of the glass in.

Then I tried that depth of field thing but I don't know how I did it, or if I did it. Either way my camera only goes down to about 5.6 apperture so I probably have the wrong settings or something.

I've just made sure they were the right size using Photobucket (when I uploaded them) but I haven't cropped them or done anything else. Wouldn't know where to start anyway!

Marcus as you have had a play with the 'depth of field' thing, you should know that the aperture is governed by your lens and not your camera. Don't know what lens you were using, but it may well have a maximum aperture of f/5.6.

If you really want to play with depth of field, the f/1.8 nifty fifty is very affordable and gives you lots of scope for messing around.

Cheers guys.

I didn't know that the DOF was affected by the lens until after watching a youtube vid last night..lol. Be damned if I can re-create what I did though.
I would like to get one of the Nifty fifties so I can get some decent portraits of my pets. Tried it tonight and the pics looked crap no matter what 'mode' I stuck it on.

Its so overcast and dull here at the moment that any photo I take just looks dull and plain. I'll get there :)

Yeh DOF is affected by 3 things. The distance you are away from the subject, the focal length or zoom of the lens and the aperture. If you are playing with DOF put it in Av. To get the shallowest DOF get really close to the subject. Hope this helps.

That helped a lot mate, thank you.

Getting there?

That's the idea. Glad I could be of service. Like the pic by the way, think it would have looked better with the 2nd one in focus, now these a challenge for you. The 2nd one would be more in keeping with the rule of thirds.

I had to do something similar for my college course.

FABULOUS NEWS MARCUS !!!!!!!!

My wife and I were biting our fingernails hoping that your wife had taken proper notice of your hints.

I love your shots Marcus, I think you and your new 450D are going to have a long and creative relationship.

The nail shot marcus is spot on with the DoF. Its a great example... You can very clearly see how it all works with it.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Very much appreciated!

Cheers Steve. I don't give hints, I just told her outright....lol  She'd charged the battery and got me a Lowepro as the Crumpler she ordered hadn't arrived in time. She's a goodun'

I have the creativity at the minute, just not the photo taking skills to take the shots I'm after.
Never got to the Zoo because of the rain. In fact if it lets up I might actually be able to take some shots outside for once!

Did manage to take this yesterday. The background is pretty rubbish but I was happy to get her in focus. Or at least, the photo looks in focus to me.

LOL - that's one grumpy cat! (but a nice shot nonetheless)

...you're wife sounds a gem.

Hoping to see the results of some Springtime Easter photography Marcus.

I'm all over it  lol

Got a few ideas milling about. National Geographic here we come!

Don't know what lens you were using, but it may well have a maximum aperture of f/5.6.

It'll have been the 18-55, probably zoomed in to around 55mm - I'd recognise that barrel distortion anywhere! The 18-55 is a fantastic starter lens but the BD bugged me so much that I replaced it with two prime lenses and got a dedicated lens for superwides.

These photos are fantastic for a fresh owner.

Glad you got the camera Marcus. Shame you never got to the zoo though. I had a go last weekend with fair success so off again on Saturday for another go. My birthday's on Sunday and I have been dropping some serious hints to my husband about a Nissin flash that I've got my eye on. Think I may have better to actually write the make and model down or gone to the shop with him ;-)

Sorry you didn't get your ideal birthday present there Claire.

mmm, when's your husband's birthday, perhaps you could by him a flash?
