Hi All,

A college friend has been asked to take the pictures at her friends church blessing (the actual wedding is in Italy) and she has asked if I will go along to help her out. They only really want a record of the day for those who could not attend the actual wedding so the pressures not too bad.
So the question is have we the essentials covered with the kit we have?
Me Nikon D90, Nikon 50mm f1.8, Sigma 24-60mm f2.8, Sigma 28-70mm f2.8-4, Sigma 70-300mm f3.5-5.6, SB600 flash, tripod.
Her Nikon D40, Nikon 50mm f1.8, Nikon 18-55mm kit lens (don't know about flash).
I've suggested that she talks to the couple about what shots they want and that we visit the church in advance. Anything else I should do (the weddings not till September) to make it a pleasurable day all round?

Cheers

Andy

to shoot the ceremony you'll need a fast tele ;) would be worth hiring the nikon one for the day maybe.

what you don't have is any backup kit, I guess you'll give her whichever f2.8 standard your not using, maybe the prime would work well for a second?

Yeh, I was thinking of borrowing a spare body from a mate (a D80) and keeping the nifty on that.

This has GOT to be a wind up. Seriously.

Swine... its not a wind up, I need help, advice, succour, encouragement, a lottery win, a facelift, a diet that works etc...

no technical knowledge to offer but lots of good wishes for a successful outcome :)

Dont know why people are saying you need a fast tele because the kit you have seems fine to me,get your friend to do the formal shots (Groups,Couple) with the 24-60 and you look out for the reportage shots with the 28-70.
As for shots during the ceremony most figures are fine as long as you don't use flash so stick it on a tripod and use the tele zoom

what makes you think that not every one is twisted!

Michael

Get out of here you, you're bad and you've got ironing to finish.

Now thats proper advice. Thank you.

thats carp advice, churches are dark (least all the ones near me are) and if your shooting the ceremony from the back you need something longer than 60mm

200mm on that has to be f5 ish which is the best part of 2 stops slower than f2.8 so you can use a quarter of your previous shutterspeed assuming max iso which is usually grainy as hell.

now from an exposure calculator "average home interiors" will give you 1/30th of a second f5.6 iso 3200. Churches are darker than that. 1/30th won't freeze motion unless you've got steady hands you will have camera shake too. f2.8 gives you 1/125 which is just about good enough.

TRIPODS DO NOT STOP SUBJECT MOTION BLUR, just camera shake

Fair point mate. Also if its a dark, grey day the light inside will be even worse, also gives me the opportunity to rent a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8......mmmmm nice.
I think other than that I'm sorted lenswise.

Cheers

Spellchecker played up it should have said Vicars not Figures but I stand by my comments, you will note I said a tele zoom from the back referring to the posters 70-300 and as a Christian who has worshipped in many churches I think you will find that they are not all dark especially as the area around the alter is often spotlit

What I was also getting at was that he is being advised to spend serious readies for an exotic lens that he does not really need for what sounds a relaxed occasion with the couple wanting just some pleasant images as a record of their day

Sounds like they will already have the alter shots from Italy, find some great outside locations for group shots and have a blast.

You may want to consider hiring a fast, low-light prime lens (50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.4).

Thanks for all the help and advice folks, most useful and plenty to think about.

I couldn't quite see why the tread appeared a wind up!!

If you do not fancy splashing out on fast lenses have you a tripod, thats what we did in the days before having digital cameras that could be wound upto 1600asa. There are times when you will be able to take a shot at half a second and get it pin sharp. Remember to inroduce yourself to the vicar at the start, before the guests arrive, he is the protector of the Lord's house for the day :):)

Sorry, it was in reference to another thread - an attempt at humour (albeit a crap one)... :D
