Hello folks,

Looking for a bit of help - i am thinking about renting a fisheye and am a bit confused between a fisheye, circular fisheye and a diagonal one

I want to use it on a 5D2 and am a bit confused by it all to be honest - circular sounds simple enough but the others?.

What sort of focal length would be a goo start 8, 10, 15mm??

Any help you can offer would be fantastic

In a nutshell, on a full frame like your 5d2, an 8mm will produce a circular image, while the canon or sigma 15mm will give an image that covers the whole frame. I'd probably suggest the 15mm for starters as its a little bit easier to get to grips with.

However, there is the canon 8-15mm zoom which gives you the best of both worlds if you can find someone who rents it.
 
Thanks folks - just wanted to have a go and see what they would produce - I quite like the circular images but didnt know what fl would produce that.

will i notice a big difference between the 15mm fisheye and my 17-40 ?

You will have to watch you don't get your fingers and feet in shots - a fisheye is something I have (16 f2.8) and use occassionally. It can get done to death,but there are some scenes that suit it very well - large staircases for instance, scenes where the curvature doesn't interfer too much I find are most successful. Although I use wide angles, I don't actually like the distortion that goes with it. So cars, for instance, taken with wide angle lenses from one corner, I think are terrible - I know they are all the rage now, but it just makes the bodywork look like it has been bashed or not built straight! I suppose I prefer symmetry, used straight on I like.
