been thinking about getting a fisheye lens for sometime now just for a bit of fun realy!!

dont know much about them, anyone can give me any info on what to look out for and prices would be good :D
 
When you say fish-eye do you mean wide angle like a Sigma 10-20 or super wide like some of those freaky lens add on's you can get?
 
think he means 10-20mm lens or that sort of idea...

tamron make a lens which is 10-24mm my mate has and it seems to be ok for that kinda money, i really want one but will buy a Nikon one when i can afford it..

awesome for beach shots sunrises etc
 
This is were i got confused before it think!! what is the difference with the 10.5mm and the 10-17?? i had a play with a lens before and it took everything it from 180deg!!

get me??
 
The Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G is an ultra wide-angle 2.4x zoom lens with 109° to 61° field of view

The Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens enables a unique 180-degree picture angle

The 10-17 is a zoom, whereas the 10.5 is a prime, by the time it's at 17mm the images from the Tokina aren't far off being regular wa shots. Although there is still a bit of the fisheye effect present it's nowhere near as dramatic as at 10mm.

This shot is at 13mm with the Tokina on a D70s. It's been cropped a bit, but you still get the general idea...

the ultra wide angle i wouldnt have much use for!!

but i think thats it then the 10.5mm lens!! what kinda price would i be looking at?? to fit a nikon d70 and fuji s3?? (same fit)

Between £250-300 s/h for a Tokina and £300-£400 s/h for the Nikon

Camerapricebuster comes back with the cheapest being £469.99, and the jesspos price being £509 if you want a bricks and mortar shop. Hope this helps!

sorry for the hijack, but have you tried the tokina 10-17 on a FF camera? I have a 10.5 at the moment (use it on a D70s) but an considering either trying to get a 16mm fish or sell the 10.5 and getting a 10-17 if it doesn't have too bad falloff on ff.

Build quality is on a par with a Nikon Pro lens, there's a wee bit of CA with it, but other than that :thumbs:

Tokina advertise the 10-17 as "Full Frame" fisheye, but what they mean is it produces a complete, "regular" image rather than a circular one. The lens is only intended for APS-C cameras, so it'll probably only be any use from 15mm or so upwards on something like a D700.
 
If you're on a cropped Canon body - why not consider the Sigma 4.5mm - that's W I D E..... (Oh and there's one for sale in the classifieds from me :) )

yea, the plan was that I could use it on the D70s at 10mm+ and on the D3 at 16mm+ but I have yet to see any samples anywhere to convince me whether it is good enough.

Anyway, I've just got the 10.5 fisheye... had it a week or so... everyone keeps telling me I will get bored with it, but I'm having a fair bit of fun so far :D

It is a bit specialised to be honest though, if you want something more generally useful, try as others have said the Sigma 10-20. At 10mm it does give you the distortion you maybe desire, but obviously not quite as crazy as a fish.

The 180 degree field of view of the 10.5 can be a little tricky, the manual warns you of not getting your feet in the shot, which even having read that bit, is happening to me :lol:.... you can't really shoot lower than 90 degrees to your body....

theres nothing wrong with the buy now pay later deals, i dunno why people moan about them so much.. i just did it with my nikkor 105mm macro lens aslong as you can afford it or like me already have 90% of the cash its fine only £25 to settle it too..
 
Ok, i have skim read this, but why are people suggesting UWA lenses when the guy has asked about fisheye lenses? 10-22 Sigma is a UWA (Ultra Wide Angle) and may suffer from marginal barrel distortion (I cant say that i have noticed on my pics taken with one i borrowed and my 30d) but the guy wants a fisheye, like the one SussexBlue posted.

Am i 100% in the right ball park here OP?
 
:love: my 10.5mm Nikon :love:

It solves some crowd issues at Weddings, and I find it useful on some Landscape shoots too - especially mirrored water so long as the horizon goes exactly through the centre of the image and is level too :)

Oh - and for a fun shot at other times, here's two of mine from this fisheye already on TP elsewhere

Not always easy to avoid feet (and bellies!) in fisheye shots. I use a Sigma 8mm f/4 that I got through the forum here. It gives a full 180 degree circular image on my D700 and crops a little off the top and bottom of shots on Dx sensors.

As has been said, it's not an everyday lens but if it gives the result you want, it's the only tool for the job.
