Fix or replace? A bit of a quandry!

My Sigma 70-200 EX DG lens has been damaged!

Sigma can't do the repair due to shortage of parts, however NCC can but have quoted £155 to fix it.

Problem is I can get a new 70-200 EX DG OS for £600 with 3 year guarantee, but the timing is not great financially!

So here we go, do I stump up the £155 and repair an old lens or scrape the money together and buy the new one!

Any thoughts would be great!
 
Will the repair be guaranteed? If the nature of the repair restores the lens back to it's former glory then probably worth doing, assuming of course you were happy with it.

Another option is to sell on that famous auction site as spares or repair and use that towards a replacement.

Of course it could be a great excuse to upgrade to a new toy ;)
 
complete beginner here, so the difference between the two.

But if it was me, i would ask myself, was i completely happy with the non OS lens ?
 
The new one would be an upgrade and therefore has to be traded at the £600. I imagine once repaired it would be in the £300 price bracket as the coating has worn and she does look a little tatty.

From what I understand there is "some" guarantee on the repair but this is still an old lens. I was very happy with the non OS but I am tempted by the new and with 3 years coverage.

Suppose I am answering my own question here but thought i'd see what others might do!
 
I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to a new lens.

Sell yours as faulty - known fault for repair - and put the money towards a new one and enjoy :D
 
Thanks for the input! seems as though I have been given a curve ball. Decided not to fix lens and gonna squeeze the coffers to breaking point and push the boat out for a 120-300 OS, a lens I have always wanted at a price that cannot be passed up.

Will miss the 70-200 but may pick an oldie up later down the line.

Go for it. Is this the F2.8 version ?

It's one I've half an eye on if / when funds allow ....
 
Hi, yes it is the f2.8, can't wait. Like I said I am going to miss the 70-200 but this is a great opportunity to get a lens that I have wanted for a long time now.

No brainer for me, go for it and enjoy :), as you say, you can save up / keep you're eyes open for a 70-200 in the future if you still miss it...
