Fixed number of shots per shutter press (Nikon)

I saw a D3 user had their camera set up to take 2 shots each time they pressed the shutter. And I thought this might be useful in venues that have flickering flourescent lamps, to avoid colour shift. Is this feature/function available on either a D7000, or D700? I know I could just fire off a few shots on continuous, but the memory card soon fills...
 
They might have had bracketting on, with high speed / continuous shooting enabled. This would shoot 3/5/7/9 shots in a row, but obviously at different exposure compensations. Unsure if this is available WITHOUT bracketting.

No, they didn't, but I do use that approach myself.
