Hi guys,

In June I'm going on a cruise up the Norwegian Fjords for a week. We'll have spectacular scenery from our room balcony, and will also be doing lots of stop offs.

I'm looking for a lens that I can use to try and capture the beauty of the landscape we'll be surrounded by. My budget is around £500, and I'm using a gripped Nikon D40x (probably upgrading to D300 nearer the end of the year/early next year).

I was initially looking at the Sigma 10-20, but am now looking at the Tokina 12-24 as people seem to suggest the Tokina is much better quality (although lacking that extra 2mm).

Does anyone have any other suggestions for my price range, or am I right to be thinking of the Tokina? Should I see if I can find a good quality used Nikon 12-24 instead?

Cheers
Simon

Personally I'd take either a 16-85 or 18-200 rather than opt for just a short wideangle zoom. There'll be plenty of scenes that you'll want at least a short telephoto for

I've been to Norway countless times and have found my Canon 17-40 perfect for general use on my crop body.

I second Chivers67, you should take a zoom of some sort if you have one.

I have a 70-300, and an 18-70, so was looking at purchasing another lens to cover the wider angle below 18mm really. Or do you guys think it wouldn't be worth it.

btw, those two lenses I mentioned are the only two I've got

When I went to the Lofoten Islands last summer I took my 17-40 and my old Tamron 70-300 and was well covered for range.

If you really like super wide shots then go below 18mm. If you are on a budget then I'd say save the cash. Norway is so stunning that whatever lens you have you will come back with nice pictures.
