Flash and wildlife

last month i posted a duck photo and someone asked if i used fill flash, which i had.
I have just seen a comment in another thread "Nice to see someone else is not afraid of the flash".

this has made me wonder if it is unconventional to use flash on wildlife/birds. Is flash a no-no or is it ok to use it outdoors on wildlife?
