Any advice for a genuine beginner please; I've been asked to take some very informal pictures at a friend's wedding (a ruse to make me attend!!) which will, necessarily include some at the evening reception, etc. Any advice or advice re good tutorials/ books to start me off? Will probably be back later to ask for advice re kit! [please be kind - I really am a nervous beginner!!] ... thanks in advance

@hotshots - D700 but no flash yet other than built-in (need to invest!)
@Milster - that's brilliant, thank you - I'll definitely search for that one!

... I love this site: so many genuinely helpful people! 

You need to decide how much you would like to spend. Buying a Nikon gun is going to cost more for sure. But you can get the same for less buying 3rd party. Nissin Di866 or Di622. Then there is the even cheaper Yongnuo Speedlite YN-565EX etc

As a general rule the smaller the light the harsher the light. So a compact with a small flash is very harsh as will your built in one. If you buy a flashgun make sure it's one that tilts both horizontally and vertically. This will allow you to bounce the light of a wall or ceiling. If you do this your light source (the flash) will go from being 3-4 inches across to being 4-10 feet across as it hits the ceiling (depends on the height of the ceiling) The reason the light from the sky when filled with clouds is so soft, is the size, miles

Thanks, guys; I'm on a severely limited budget so definitely confused about best course of action !!

Look at this I have the canon version and it works very well, especially for the money, there are cheaper second hand ones on ebay but not alot cheaper than this.

Hope this helps
