Flash cable doesn't work. Any ideas?

Hi everyone

Just got a flash cable from flash in the pan, for my canon 400D to my canon 430ex speedlite.
However. When I plugged the cable to the flash and camera, it doesn't work.
I tried it on auto setting on both camera and flash, it doesn't work. Then I tried M on both and that still doesn't work.
I asked flash in the pan but he said he isn't too sure on canon, that is why I am asking here.
I am sorry if there is somethng really simple I haven't tried but I am just a casual photographer and I haven't really used my flash gun.

Any ideas??

a couple of things to check

1. Does the flash fire with the test button ( make sure the batteries are not flat.:thumbs: been there, got the t shirt)

2 make sure that you have put the cable onto the camera and the flash onto the cable the right way round. The Jessops lead I have has the cable coming out the plug to the front , I expected the lead to point from the back of the camera, I still have to check that I have them the right way round.

Yeah I have checked both things that you have mentioned. the flash flashes when I press the red button and it also flashes when it's mounted directly on the camera.

it just doesnt work on the cable.
any other ideas?
 
Sorry but I just cant resist stating the obvious, sounds like the cable is broke!:bonk:

If its an ETTL cable then there are what five or six cables inside. If you ever get to look, you'll find just how fine they are. No big surprise if one or more gets broke, even with an original despite the cost of the thing. They're very small wires!
The flash works on and off the camera, so its got to be just the cable not connecting. Right?
My advice, if you've paid money, return and get a refund.

When the cable is connected to the hotshoe which way does the lead go, out towards the lens or back towards you?
 
Flash, you did send him the Canon and not the Nikon version didn't you?

Yup, wouldn't be the first time someone (on TP) tried to fit the cable backwards though. :naughty:

No drama if it is a duffer, it'll get sorted out :thumbs:

Flash, the wire is towards the lens, I made sure I line the metal dots up before I put it on.

The thing is, when I auto focus, I can see the red light flashing (on the front of the flash) it also flashes on and off for 3-10 secs after I have auto focus.
Does this mean anything?

when I disconnect the wire and mount the flash direct on the camera (without changing any settings) the flash works fine.
