Just got my new Nissin di622 and I'm after using it off camera, I can trigger it with the pop up flash, but what if I want to fire it without triggering the pop up flash? I know there are cables and wireless triggers but I don't really know what I'm looking for. I'd like to go as cheap as possible for now, the cables I was looking at were about £40 which makes me think I was looking at the wrong thing or is that about right?

It's on a Nikon d3100 by the way. Thanks for any help

It's going to depend on which version of the Di622 you have, as the earlier ones are notoriously flaky when it comes to working with wireless triggers...

Thanks, I think that's the sort of thing I'm after for now, although it might be a bit short.

When you say you lose ttl on a radio trigger, do they not work by putting the transmitter on the camera and flash on the receiver, then trigger like an on camera flash when the shutter is pressed? Sorry, I really know nothing about off camera flash.

Yes the radio transmitter sits on the camera and sends to any number of slaves.

BUT.. you have to buy expensive triggers for them to send the camera TTL data if you want the camera to control the flash.

But sevendayshop do simple remote triggers that can be used to trigger up to 4 remote flash guns, you have to put your camera in manual mode though as it doesn't know you have a flash attached.

Best thing about the 7day ones is that you can use them in reverse, and use the slave on the camera ( with the cable supplied) to trigger the camera using the transmitter up to 10 or more metres away.

The curly cable ones from 7day can be modified if you have the tools, I have cut the cable and fitted connectors so I can extend the cable length using cat-5 ethernet cables ( which are quite cheap ), and works fine with a 10m
cable I had lying around.

Right TTL stands for 'Through The Lens Metering', what it means is the camera adjusts the power of the flash automatically.

If you use cheap radio triggers you need to adjust the flash power manually.

Ok, thanks. I think the cable route is the way to go for now then. I got a friend who should be able to extend it for me.

i've got a set of these wireless triggers, £30 delivered.

Just bought some from ebay this morning for £12 delivered, and that's one transmitter with 2 recievers so Im quite chuffed, they're the same as these on amazon for £25 here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002RD9GNA

Hopefully they will do the job, at least they are a cheap way into toying with off camera flash, I've been using my gun off camera and using its inbuilt slave being triggered with the on camera flash but I want to try it without the on camera flash and think this will be the best way for now :-)

Thanks chaps, think I might look into those receivers myself at that price. Let me know how you get on with them if you don't mind, thanks :)

right, they arrived today and they are spot on

They work perfectly well, granted they don't look like or feel like the quality of "proper" pro ones but they do what it says on the tin.

Just need now to start doing some off camera work :-)
