Flash Grip

I have strange question have Nikon D300 just got SB900 Flash Gun have always used attached to Camera, what the advantage of flash Grip, any advice would be great

The advantage is separating the flash from the lens to reduce red eye and throw the shadows below the subject so they are less distracting.

If you are shooting macro a bracket will let you illuminate your subject without having the lens casting a shadow on it.
