Flash gun for D600. Help please!

Hi all

My D600 is due to arrive tomorrow. I'm looking for a flash gun so I can have one available should need be, but I have literally zero knowledge on them. I don't need anything too crazy, just a basic flash gun, as I won't be using it for long distances etc. Essentially I'm looking for the cheapest one I can get my hands on. Can anybody advise please and point me in the direction of where to go?

If you are after a Nikon flashgun then a Nikon SB600 will be the way to go if you are after a decent flashgun on a budget. You should be able to get one S/H and in good condition for about £120. If its new you are after then you can't go wrong with a Nikon SB700.
 
the nikon sb400 is a great compact flash gun, cheap, reliable, and gives great results. its the perfect take anywhere flash unit for someone needing the basics. i bought mine new for £70 off e-bay.
 
I sold my SB600 for a SB700, its a lot easier to use and has a better menu system. Definitely worth the extra if you can stretch the budget.
 
If you don't mind using manual flash, and tbh it's no harder than TTL, you have more control, you can't go wrong with a Yongnuo. I used to have a 460, which was about £40 - did the job for me for a year. I then got a 560, bit more powerful and has zoom, bigger and tougher than the 460. I think it was about £60. You can't go wrong with that. I still use it today, though I have added 2 B900 units, the YN-560 will still be used as a fill light.

Cheers all! Didn't realise I'd had a load more responses since my last post. I shall have a scan around with the tips you've given me. I'll be on the BTCC grid at Brands next week so maybe I'll sort something in time for that, maybe I won't.... Hmm.

Cheers, but I haven't been a member for the amount of time you need before you can see the classifieds, so I've still not peaked into there. ;)
 
I've had a SB-900 and an SB-700, the flash unit I've kept through everything is a jessops 360!!!!

Reason being; I don't need continuous flashes (I'm fine to wait a couple of seconds), don't use CLS and don't need high speed sync.

If you want a flash just to give you light, anything will do (check it has an ok recycle time!).

If I needed a flash with the above I'd be going back to the SB-700.

That's what I'm thinking, I just need something fairly basic for those "need for light" moments. It's not going to be used all that often.

My Dad has found his old SB20, so I could attempt to use that in the meantime however confusing the back looks to me. :lol:
 
Be careful!

I don't know if it applies to the SB20 specifically but the older flash units use a higher trigger voltage that can fry your camera's flash mount (at least I think that's the right explanation).
