Flash gun for my Cannon 1000d Advised needed

Good afternoon everyone

I am looking for a flash gun for my 1000d i take alot of photos inside for a website i look after and sometimes the built in flash just doesnt cut it. Even with all the settings changed sometimes the light is just not good enough

Now looking around there are a few out there and i dont have a clue. Do i go for a Cannon make or a aftermarket one

Looking for something that is easy to use and does the trick.

Well if you don't really know much about flash then I'd be inclined to go for a Canon flashgun which is likely to give you the full range of automation and features with a Canon camera. Get an ETT-L one for maximum convenience in use - they really do make using a flash a lot easier.

If you want a flashgun which has a rotating head to enable you to bounce the flash off walls etc, Canon makes the 430EX II (which will set you back £200). However, if you just want a more dedicated flashgun than the in-camera flash, which doesn't have the ability to rotate, there is the 270EX for around 120 quid i think.

Does the ability for the head to rotate make that much difference in terms of all i want is to be able to take better photos when there is no option to increase the light

I could say "No" if you like Richard but in truth it makes a huge difference to be able to swivel the head and bounce it off walls and ceilings etc to give a softer more even spread of light and even effectively change the angle at which the light hits the subject as well as avoiding red eye from on camera flash.

A fixed head flash like the 270EX will still be a gazillion miles better than the little on board flash. You could improve matters by getting the flash off the camera hot shoe, but that would involve using an extension cord and more expense anyway as well as being a lot less convenient in use.

To be fair Richard there are cheaper flashguns from other makers and many people opt for them, but the way I see it there has to be a lot of compatibility of some pretty complex electronics between the flashgun and camera so I prefer to use the camera manufacturers own gun.

This is 100% true ETT-L makes a massive difference when your starting out or you just want to hammer away in a dynamic situation. I wouldn't however rule out thrid part options, there are many on the market that offer full compatibility with your canon body but will get you alot more flash for your buck. I have a Sigma flash and I really can't fault it especially as second hand it was only just over £100.

Definately get one with a rotating head it free's up so many options for easy improvement in quality that I really wouldn't be without one!
 
Hi richard, I've got a nissin di866 mk1 and it worlks perfectly with my 550d as a hotshoe flash. Has all the e-ttl capabilities and swivel and tilt head and is rated as the most powerful hotshoe flash in the world. I've recently got a 7d and yesterday set it up to work wirelessly from that as well as hotshoe. Bear in mind that the di866 mk2 is out for around £200, about the same as a canon 430ex. Also you could have a look at the nissin di622 which is about £100 and can also be set as wireless. They are very good flashes.
