Yes
i've got a Hanimex Pro 550 Flash gun and was wondering if there is anyway to trigger it off camera?

Cheers

So that will work?

The reason i'm alttile bit worried is , i've been told the flash is too high voltage to place on the camera itself.
I wouldn't want to damaged the camera.

Yes, it will work perfectly.

The alleged potential to damage a camera with triggering voltage is a bit of a red herring to be honest, even if your flash is one of the older higher voltage models. There's a website somewhere that lists tigger voltages, or you can measure it very easily, or phone the manufacturer.

But whatever the situation, you are connecting it to a remote radio receiver so it cannot possibly damage the camera.

Most cameras are o.k. up to 250 volts (probably more than that but 250v is usually the specification). Check your manual.

Most flash trigger voltages are lower than this. Can you measure yours?

If not let me know. I have a couple of these flashes and I can measure the voltage for you.

I agree with HoppyUK about this being a red herring. There is a lot of unecessary paranoa on this subject.

Steve.

having looked around the internet - it appears the flashes voltage is 270v.

My camera is a EOS 1000D (will have to check the camera's acepted voltage when i ger home from work)

Table I just checked said 234v, and several other Hanimex guns were also high http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

Seems very high to me, but maybe not worth the risk. Steve knows about these things. However, no probs with a remote trigger.

Or you could try this test - stick your tongue around the contacts and if it tingles, you're ok. If it throws you across the room, maybe not.

I have just measured my two flashes and they are both 56 volts.

56v is a standard value for a zener diode so I am assuming they are zener limited.

However, I think you should do Hoppy's tongue test.... and video it.... and put it on Youtube.

Steve.

i think i'll leave the tongue test :P

and pick up one of those trigger thingys :)

Cheers guys.
