Hello Folks

So I bought a cheapo flashgun from eBay to get me started from a shop called Savebase

It was listed as fitting most of the Canon EOS range including my D60 circa 2003, only problem is I can't get it to work on any setting or ISO am I missing something here?

It says in my Canon manual use manual setting on 100 or 200 but nada

Assistance greatly appriciated

Could you supply a link, or a picture of the flashgun? I'm sure some of the more experienced people here can help you out!

I don't want to sound alarmist, but it sounds like something is wrong.

Flash guns are not to be tampered with as there are very high voltages inside, potentially fatal. I believe health and safety forbids technicians from working alone on flash guns for fear of electricution  so heed the warning. A colleague once took a disposable flash camera apart over dinner and managed to weld the cutlery together with it!!!

Does the flash fire when you press the test button? Is it seated properly in the hot shoe? It is a very basic flash, and unquestionably cheap and nasty for £15 or whatever, so maybe a wire is loose? It should fire on any hot shoe camera, simply by shorting the two contacts - one on the side of the shoe with the centre pin.

It says the trigger is high voltage, and all modern cameras are low voltage. I wonder if it has fried the camera internally. If you can find a way of shorting the two firing contacts manually, with something very carefully insulated in case there is high voltage leaking about in there where it shouldn't be, then the flash should fire. If it doesn't, there's your problem.

Hi Hoppy

Of it fires fine from the test button there appears to be nothing wrong with the gun it just won't work on my shoe and I checked the connections, it's listed on the eBay item as working with my Camera so I will put the onus on them for an incorrect listing at the very least.

Many thanks

I took disposable camera apart to get the film out and accidentally got a shock from the flash circuit. It gives you quite a jolt!

Does the flashgun have a switch on it to put it into optical slave mode? When that is activated on guns that have it, the hotshoe contact is disabled, although they will still fire from the test button.

canon d60 ? i bet they didnt know what flash gun to send out , so they guessed wrong:D

It's a really basic gun. No slave facility. Just hot shoe trigger. It will work on any camera - this gun is not camera specific, despite what the ad may say.

To check if it's the camera, try it with a different flash gun.

To check if it's the gun, fire it by shorting the hot shoes contacts manually (which is all the camera does). Heed the warnings above  If it does not fire, the gun is faulty.

Thanks guys

I have heard back from the Ebay shop saying did you have fully charged batteries in it?...lol

It's there issue under terms as if you search Canon D60 Flashgun they pop up and says in the body guranteed to work, so it's there problem and I will demand a refund, guss I should save up and buy a Sigma AF 530 like a good little boy.

Cheers

I might well use that on the eBay shop owner if they mess me about.

Well sometimes things just make no sense....

I bought a very nice Body bar and pan head along with an off camera flash cable from Flash in the pan (great value and service) got it all home today and though what the hell lets just see what it all looks like put together and the bloody flash works, so either a faulty shoe on my body or bad contacts....I will try another flash from a friend to make sure.

I have spoken to the eBay seller and large slice of humble pie for moi...lol

Cheers all
