Flash gun vs Speed Light?

Good morning guys.

Just a quick question, I have been viewing work involving flash guns and speed lights and I wanted to know, is there much difference between them both?

Speedlights are a Nikon brand and Speedlites are a Canon brand, they are both a range of flash guns, or strobes if you are in the U.S.

speedlights were originally what Americans called our electronic flashes. As against sashlights which were their bulb flashes.

The only difference is that some people refer to "flash guns" as flashes limited to the highest shutter speed that the camera can synchronize to ie 250th sec.And then refer to a flash that can do high speed synchronization as a "speedlight" that can do 8000th sec.

Flash gun -limited to camera synchronization speed.

Speedlight - no limit to shutter speed.

It is just a brand name as other posters have said but if another tog says to me "do you have a speedlight you will need one" I would say do you mean a flash with HSS(high speed synchronization) just to check.
