Hi all i am using a SB26 on a Nikon d70. I am confused as to how to use my flashgun properly. I get results sometimes but more luck than judgement realy.

Does anyone know of any good tutorials, whether they be books, online or one to one training.?
 
Don't know anything about Nikon flashguns but the subject has come up before. Try searching the forums.

Hopefully a Nikon user will be along soon. Might help if you change your thread title to 'Nikon flash help wanted' or something similar ;)
 
Mart you really need to read the instruction books for your camera and for the flashgun to get a good understanding. Until then if you set the camera mode on P, and the flash mode on TTL, the whole flash/exposure system is integrated and fully automatic.

I used to own SB 24 and SB 26 flashguns and it's very difficult to get a bad exposure with them if used as above. :)
 
To me it sounds as if you are using full manual and not setting it correctly. Best enable TTL and automatic exsposure, that will give you the best results until you get through the manual/ebooks. You can use it with A,S,P and M too.

Unfortunately the D70 (D2 series) saw the introduction of iTTL flash metering. In essence means you can ONLY use the SB600, SB200R and/or SB800 speedlites in TTL auto mode.

The camera uses a pre-flash to sort out flash output and none of the previous speedlites enabled the camera to perform this function. You should be able to use the SB26 in auto or manual modes but definitely not TTL. As you say, you have had some success but it was done to luck :(

You could also use some of the indepents 'guns (Sigma or Metz) but I couldn't tell you models.

sorry for resurecting an old thread (was trauling looking for a similair question) I have a D50 and am looking for a flashgun, I have been given a very old one but im struggling to get results. (also it doesent swivel so i cant bounce it off things)

What would you suggest, I was looking at an SB 24 on Ebay, would that be ok on the D50 on auto modes?

the auction ends on may 23rd (3 days from now)

any advice / opinions woudl be aprececiated
 
done a bit of searching myself, and it seems the sb 24 wont work in anything but P mode on a D50

any body got any other suggestions? the cheaper the better (I am saving up for some faster lenses so trying to keep camera spend to a minimum for now)
 
If you can stretch to it Kerso sells the SB600 for £139 plus postage on ebay, bought one myself much easier than using manual modes.
 
Lazy I know but can anyone confirm if the sb600 or sb800 has a head that can be swivelled ALL the way around, 360 degrees? I have the sb28 and could do with a little more flexibility with the head swivel and tilt. Plus by getting the newer flash i can stick it on my d70s with less bother too. Have only tried to use the flash on the d70s once at the end of an event i was covering with the d70s as a second body/ back up and didn't have the patience to change my work pattern for that camera with flash, as someone above said it doesn't work in ttl... different to the s2pro i use normally. auto should do it tho, just haven't tried it yet to be happy..
 
The SB 600 & 800 do not swivel all the way round, they have a 180 degree arc and the flash can point straight up if required.

Nikon have just introduced a new 'gun, the SB400 nowhere near the "bouncy" verastility of the 600 or 800 but you said cheap (was one on fleabay for £90 the other day) and it is entirely compatible with all the latest dSLRs. :shrug:

Some chuffer needs to design it to turn 360 on it´s axis... just for me :love:

You could always get a cable and use your hand (or assistant) .... then you could have 4320º swivelling..... ;) :p
 
Aye, true. But i'm prefer a free hand as all i need is the flash to point the opposite way, ie up and behind me and in portrait mode (camera side on for those confused) i simply have to turn the camera to the right instead of my preferred to the left. I'd prefer to have my shooting button on the top when shooting sideways (portrait) but with the flash needing to be up and behind i tend to have to turn it to the left... i need to clarify i know.. but i don't want to hijack the thread any further! :)
 
Give us a shout if you decide to trade the SB26 for something with iTTL.
