hey guys, i'm fairly new to photography,

and i want to talk flash guns, my mum has been kind enough to lend me a flash gun that she has, i'm using it on my canon 500D, its only a cheap 'yinyan' model and she recons she payed about £50 for it.

even after playing with it for 30 mins i can tell its leaps and bounds better than the on board flash.

now my question is, when i come to buy one, what is the difference between this cheap model, and a canon one that will cost me over £250?

ettl = evaluative through the lens.

From my understanding is that it auto adjusts like the onboard flash. Whereas non ettl models you have to manually set the power.

And you can get eTTL with a Yongnuo flashgun without forking out £200+ for a Canon flashgun.. The YN-465 seems to be now around the £50 mark and should do the job nicely.

Full price for a Canon flash will get you better build quality, a few more options, a bit more power (or a lot more, depending on the Canon model).. and a much lighter wallet.
 
cheers guys, i'll have a look at that article now, but its nice to know i don't HAVE to empty my wallet on the canon one!

I'm not familiar with Yinyan, quick Googling suggests a mixed reputation. First step is to identify the exact model number. Yinyan produces several different flashes. Hopefully there's something useful printed on it.
 
thanks alistair, looked up the model number, (cy-32twz) and seems it doesn't have ETTL, and i'm guesing that it having a single centre pin on the shoe confirms this.
 
Cheaper than the Canon's but more than the Yinyan is the Nissin Di622 or their 800series. Gets good reviews, a friend of mine has the 622 for Canon and it's a decent well built flash with ETTL.
