Flash modes/TTL-BL etc on Nikon SB400

I have sb800 and 900 flashes but am considering a small nice low profile SB400 for certain types of work I do where I don't really want a big top heavy flash waving around. I generally use the flash as daylight fill in/uplift images a little...

1) Can you do/how do you do TTL-BL etc on an SB400 with no LCD panel for modes or flash control? Is the only control the compensation control on my D300/700?

2) Generally are they powerful enough to provide some fuill in outside at around 10-25 feet?

Thanks, think it was as i guessed then, there is no ttl-bl and flash power is adjusted via the flash control of the D700
