Flash or Macro Ring...

What are the opinions on here with regard to standard flash, macro ring flash or LED light rings?

I'm erring towards getting an LED macro Ring flash as they are generally cheaper and would be beneficial to any micro videography I would be interested in trying (insect/wildlife) but I know from previous threads one or two people are very vocal about the uselessness of LED ring lighting.

Personally I would get a proper macro flash Set up for stills, I have the Nikon r1 set and love it, when I use it. I just don't think the led macro lights are bright enough. Ring flashes are just to even in general for my liking.

Would anyone know what the equivalent Canon macro flash is to go with the 100 L on a 7D? Cheers

Just to update this thread I went to Central America recently and didn't take either flash or ring LED lights. Lucky I didn't buy a flash in the end as if you're going to be shooting wildlife with a guide at night they aren't happy with you using a flash as it causes problems for the wildlife (bright flashes for night creatures a no no). I ended up lighting my subjects with a hand torch so some kind of ring LED system would probably be the better bet for that sort of thing.

Canon do two flashes called Macrolites. The MR-14EX Macrolight and the MR-24EX Macrolight.
The The numbers are the guide numbers of the flash, the 14 is a ring light style with two flashes either side of the ring and the 24 has two totally separate and adjustable small flashes on an adjustable rail around the lens adapter.
The lens adapter is extra unless you have the MPE65 macro lens where ist is built in to the lens.
I hope this helps.

the LED options are generally frowned upon but I can see the advantages considering your last post. Also I can imagine that continuous lighting helps focusing.
do you have sample btw? always interesting in seeing some shots.
my concern would also be that: are the LED continuous systems sufficiently wide bore for your 100mm USM L ?
