Flash or no? Splash or no?

Now I've got a photography-specific URL, I want to design a photography-only site... But I was wondering how splash screens & flash went down nowadays?

I've had the comment 'it's so 1998' - is this true, or do photography sites get a bit of leeway?
 
a 100% flash site for me is unnecessary and will drive your average user up the wall (back and forward buttons will reload the site etc).

splash screens again unnecessary in my opinion. just have a nice welcome screen.
 
My 1998 comment may have been exaggerating a bit, but there's more room expand on it rather than 140 character on twitter.

Very few well designed modern websites have a splash page, they serve no purpose and annoy people, you can show big pictures on your homepage, but have some content there too. Think of websites you visit and like the design of, how many have splash pages?

Flash is very much personal taste, not everyone can view it, it takes ages to load and with HTML5/CSS/Javascript there isn't really anything that 100% requires Flash anymore. This is coming from someone who used to make a living doing Flash, it's not quite a dead technology, but it is dying...
 
Everyone has thier own opinion on flash, some like it some dont

Personally I hate it and will click off a website as soon as I see its been done in flash.

A small flash object on a site however doesnt bother me as long as its not all done in flash
