Hi, do you guys have any tips for flash photography inside a hall?

What mode/settings should i use? manual? shutter speed at 60/ and aparture as wide open as i can?

I will be using a canon 430ex mk2 On my canon 400d

I'm using a tamron f2.8 17-50mm and yes pics of people. I think the ceiling may be too High to bounce the flash.

Cool. At what angle should I point my flash? I guess it will depend how close I am to the person I am taking the pic.

That's the one you have to work out, it will depend on many things, the wall angles, the direction you want the light to hit the subjects etc. However, generally I have mine facing 45 degrees back, right and up, then when I go to portrait orientation the head is facing 45 degrees back, left and up.

There are times when I don't get nice lighting doing this so will have to adjust but that's a good start.

Think about what direction you want the light to hit your subject from. Point your flash to where you would place an off camera light and that's the direction it will come back from.

For the bounce method you want as much light to get into the camera as possible so you've got f2.8 then use it, going for f4 will mean the flash is having to put out double the power each time. I do sometimes use this method with my 24-105mm f4 but it's better with f2.8 or even faster. The focal length isn't going to affect the exposure so don't worry about shooting wide angle, concentrate on getting the shot. I often work at 200mm f2.8 using this method with very pleasing results, no harsh flash on faces which is exactly what is needed when working fast at a wedding reception etc.
