Flash problem

My pop up flash on my old 20D won't pop up or fire my external flashgun.
Any idea's as to why would be gratefully received :thumbs:
 
What mode do you have the camera in? Some modes don't allow the flash to pop up unless the camera wants it to - green square I think...

I take it the external flash is set to optical slave mode? If not, then it won't fire....

Even if it is in slave mode it still won't fire if the popup flash isn't up and firing to trigger the external.

Hence why I asked about whether the camera is in a mode that won't allow the flash to pop up.

Maybe a helpful comment would be more appropriate than trying to belittle other members....

Hi

Presume you mean when your external flash is connected to the camera it won't fire (as the 20D doesn't have the capability to remote fire an external flash with the pop up one)

It could be the tiny micro switch located under one of the metal plates on your hotshot is stuck down - think you can raise it again carefully with a toothpick if so...

I wasn't belittling anybody, just you trying to belittle me with your post by the sounds of it!!

Just emphasising that there is more than one way to fire an external flash. I was in fact supporting your post about firing it optically which would need the pop up flash to fire first to trigger it. The OP may have the external flash set to fire by IR or even an off camera cord - in which case the external flash not firing has nothing to do with the pop up one not firing.

Not everyone is as knowledgeable as you obviously are.
 
Ploddles - please accept my apologies. Bit tetchy tonight and I thought by highlight part of my post you were being critical :)

OP - do you mean you're trying to fire an off-camera flash via the pop-up flash?

I think this is the problem as it doesn't matter what mode I use it just won't pop up or fire my flashgun whilst connected to the camera or with remote triggers.
I will have to see if there are any youtube clips to help me not ruin it completely. Thank you..

Ps. Don't think I'v ever used full auto on that camera :thinking:
