Flash probs

I have recently been given a 70-210mm sigma lens which is pretty much compatible with my camera (400d) when in auto or manual. My question is, is there anyway I can turn off the flash when it's in auto as I'm going to Olympia horse show on Sunday to support my SIL who is competing - I want a few decent pics but I don't think flash is a good idea. Is it possible on my camera to disable flash?

I'm not really confident enough to get half decent shots in manual. I will try though. Thanks for replying!

Im sure there is a way. I sold my canon a few days ago so can't check what setting it is. If you go in to your settings then go to the flash settings then have a look as im sure you can do it.

If you're shooting horses at a canter or gallop you might find it easier to turn to either TV and set your shutter speed according to the speed they're travelling and let the camera do the rest of the settings, or set it to AV and select the depth of field you want to capture how much of the horse you want in focus and let the camera set the shutter speed and ISO itself. Either of those settings wont automatically set the flash.
However if you're shooting indoors if your lens is the f4-5.6 version and the light isn't great don't expect too much. You should be able to get the pics if your lens is the f2.8 version though. When you get there shoot a few shots in different settings before the action starts and have a look to see which settings work best. Good luck for sunday to you and your SIL.

In settings there should be an option to disable the pop up flash.

As has been mentioned, you would be better off shooting in M or TV mode but make sure you get the pics you wanted even if you use auto :).

Thanks all, the tv and av modes don't work with the sigma lens unfortunately and I'm not too confident with manual. The lens is the 4 - 5.6 one not the 2.8 unfortunately. Tbh I'm not holding my breath! I've looked in settings but no mention of flash. Never mind I will take my compact as back up! You are allowed flash but I just think it will be ineffective at the distance I will be sitting.

Don't know but only auto and manual work with these lenses. Its because they are older lenses apparently.

You could set your camera on manual, set your shutter speed and Aperture normally with the light meter then switch on auto iso to compensate for changes in light. Would save you having to change SS AP all the time

Just a thought

If you must use an Auto mode put it onto Sports - that disables the flash.

Mine is the 4-5.6 not 2.8 but tbh I'm really disappointed as the error comes up a lot. It won't work in any other auto modes just auto or manual. I think I'm just going to take my compact as I think lugging my dslr and lenses round all day will just pee me off if I don't even get one shot.

The lens has the sam,e issue. Old sigma lenses may need rechipped to make them compatible and even at that some cannot be done (I think this lens is in that lineup).

Check with Sigma Imaging.
