Is it worth buying the same make flash as the camera? I don't have one at the moment but not sure if i should get a Canon one to go with my 450D?

If your budget allows then a 430EX II will do the job nicely, if it won't stretch to that then the budget makes like YongNuo, Nissin, Sigma and Jessops all offer suitable flashes, the trade-off is in build quality and reliability, although all will be fine unless you're planning to be especially rough with it....

There are countless alternatives to the branded models and I know a few full time pro's who use Nissin, and YN models. I personally go for canon own, as I'm gullible.

Ok, so i dont 'have' to buy a canon make?

No, But make sure you get one that's compatible with Canon  Different cameras makes have different hotshoe fittings.
I have a canon 430EXII ~£180 and a Yongnuo YN468 ~£60. The Canon feels much nicer, but not sure if it was worth (to me) paying three times as much.
Just compare the features list and what each means before buying.

Might be scraping the idea now as it looks like i may be getting rid of the Canon after all.
