Flash shots making different WB's

If I take an indoor shot with flash with the 40d on manual and the flash on ETTL so it uses the flash as fill-in, I have the shutter on 1/13th to get only some ambient background light and the aperture on F4.

I then take another pic exactly the same but with aperture on F22 for more dof.

Obviously more light getting in through the F4 aperture, but they are completely different white balances.

Makes no odds if I set it to flash whitebalance or what.

So therefore if I was at a wedding reception and wanted to change aperture... would I end up with lots of shots of different white balances?

Correction gels are the way to go.

I'm assuming that by moving to f22, you then decrease shutter speed. So you'll pull in more ambient light as a result of dragging the shutter.

no i was using 1/13th with both to get the same background light in.... then allowing the flash to fill the subject correctly. i guess id have to decide what F stop to use and stick to it.

but if you changed the aperture from f4 to f22 with the shutter still at 1/13 you wouldn't be letting the same amount of ambient light in. Once you reduced the aperture the flash would start to be the main light source. As others have said, you need to use gels to match your flash with the ambient

At 1/13 F4 you will have a certain ambient/flash ratio. At 1/13 F22 you will have a much different ambient/flash ratio. Off the top of my head that's about 5 stops less ambient which would explain your change in overall colour temperature.
