I am completely new to flash photography. In fact I haven't even purchased a flash gun yet. A very generous photographer is going to lend me a flash to practice with but I have no idea where to start. I am looking for direction on how to study flash use, the basics in which to start studying. Something like exposure study advise where you start with the exposure triangle and move forward. Is there a basic list of topics to study first for flash use? Perhaps a list of things to tackle.

I believe the flash I will be using is a Canon 420 or 430 sorry I'm not sure. I will be using a 600D as well. For what its worth, my interest (for now) is fill flash but I do not want to limit my understanding and want to really get a full understanding of flash use in time.

Thanks for the help.

I dont know about there being a list but i would recommend you getting Syl Arena "Speedlighter's Handbook" it seems to cover everything you need to know about speedlighting

Thanks Phil this really helps. Pretty much everything in this video is information that I did not know. There is so much information available that it is easy to start in the wrong place. That is why I ask for the basics. Thanks again

Mark Wallace's vids are usually good.

^^^ This. Excellent book, easy to read, comprehensive with a bit of theory and tech plus plenty of practical stuff, up to date, 100% Canon
