Ok so ive just ordered myself the YN467 i-TTL flash. for the last couple of days I thought id have a browse on you tube for flash tutorials. I found so good ones. but I have a question..

I was watching a vid where he was taking photos of a lady in the sunset, he exposed for the setting sun then used the flash to fill the lady with great results.

now my question is how do you do this? Im guessing that when you half press the shutter and your little focus dot blinks red (in my case) and it beeps, this focuses and takes the exposer reading. If so how do you then re focus on the subject as it will then take a fresh meter reading from the subject??

I have the Nikon D3100 if that helps.

Thanks.

Auto focus on the person then turn the lens onto manual focus, then select spot metering and hold the shutter halfway. Then either recompose and take the shot or look at the shutter speed and aperture and then dial them into manual mode. This way you can change the shutter speed and aperture to perfect the shot.

right ok I think I get that. do cameras make any noise or anything when they meter or is just done automatically at what ever your pointing the lens at?

On the back of the camera is a button marked AE-L/AF-L which can be programmed via the menu to perform a number of different tasks, one of which is to lock the exposure. Even then you have two options - press & hold or press & lock. Press&hold locks the exposure in as long as you hold the button in whereas press&lock allows you to release the button and the exposure will stay locked until you press it again.

Once you've programmed it through the menu then point the camera into the sky (or wherever you want to meter from) and press the button - hold if you've selected press&hold or release if you've programmed press&lock - recompose and focus on your subject and press the shutter release. Simples!

If you programme the button for press&lock then remember to press it again to release the exposure lock or it'll stay on until you switch the camera off.

Hope that's easier to understand than it appears now I re-read it :D
