Yes
Might be a daft question  but I'm sure someone on here will know...

I have a Canon Speedlite 199A which I used to use on my AE-1 film camera and I just wondered whether I could use it on my 400D?

I don't just want to try it without finding out in case I mess anything up :)

Thanks in advance

Neil

This Comet deal is flying round the web at great speed. Phone them NOW!

Neil, that's an old gun and there may be a theoretical problem with a high triggering voltage affecting the switching contacts of a modern camera if you use it a lot. But I seriously doubt it. Give Canon technical a quick call.

But at the end of the day, it's not very powerful - not hugely more powerful than the built-in flash - and you'll not have all the creative options and automatic controls of something like the 430EX.

I guess that if it was me, in an emergency, I'd use it. But then get a much better modern flash as soon as I could afford it.

Ahhhh, just a note, this is the 430 MkI not the MkII and although there are only a few differences it might swing it for some people ;)

True. The main thing they've done to the Mk2 is beef up the mounting foot, which is now metal and the contacts are tweaked a bit. Apparantly, if you are constantly taking the gun on and off (eg press tog) with the Mk1 held in portrait mode, the contacts could be a bit unreliable.

They've redsigned the battery cover and little cosmetics things like that, but in performance and features the Mk1 and Mk2 are identical.

No idea but just seen 430ex is £120 at comet at the mo

Great if I wanted to buy a new one :|. But I just wanted to know if my old one is useable :)

Yowsers thanks for the heads up jj, I've reserved one but have a 40m round trip to collect, actuall price was ~£116! and I needed a manually adjustable flash for my new Cactus kit \o/

Thanks, I appreciate its a bit 'old' but wanted to try it to see if it is any good at all. No great loss if its no good unless trying it would cause any damage to the camera.

Sounds like a great flashgun :|

Anyone else have any thoughts on whether my gun is useable?

Cheers

It is usable. I've told you that.

ok point I was trying to make was might not be worth the risk for the sake of a hundred quid.

EDIT: http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00J7Gz

Thanks James, you're right its not worth the risk for £100, hence the question.

Oh and thanks for the link

Thanks HoppyUK, it was your use, and emphasis, of may, theoretical and if that threw me . But thanks for your input, it is appreciated honestly :)
