Flashgun and Canon 7d

Hi there. I've never used a flashgun before, but I am starting to progress with my photography so would like to try out a flashgun to enable me to bounce the light from the ceiling/wall etc. I have read some reviews and seen that the canon 430ex is reasonably priced (cheap!) but that the pop-up flash will still go off even when I attach the flashgun to the hotshoe? I wonder if anyone can give me advice on this and tell me whether this is true, or a way around this? Thanks is advance

I'd have thought this is would be in "wireless" mode where the camera's flash acts as a master trigger for the slave flash (for when the flash is off camera)? It shouldn't occur if the flash is directly in the hotshoe.

It's actually impossible for the built in flash to lift once you've got a speedlight in the hotshoe.
As above, it's a misunderstanding of the functionality of the wireless system

Thanks!! yes that does make sense now, just got very confused with other reviews that I had read.
:)
